Groups miss out as Sedgemoor tightens belt

May 20, 2010

COMMUNITY groups across Bridgwater look set to miss out on cash, as Sedgemoor District Council slashes its grants to help plug a £2million hole in its coffers.

The £100,000 cutbacks, if confirmed by councillors on Tuesday, will hit Bridgwater's Carnival entertainments programme, Britain in Bloom and Bridgwater Arts Centre.

But the latest wave of savings come with a warning that there will be more to come - after Sedgemoor revealed it was planning for a £12MILLION financial deficit over the next five years.

Council leader Duncan McGinty told the Mercury: “The financial situation that we, along with every other local authority, finds itself in means there will be serious cuts to services.

“We have been told we will have our Government funding cut, so services will inevitably have to be cut too.

“Our only other source of funding is by raising council tax and we are unable to do that.”

This week's decision on grants funding will, if approved by councillors, see Bridgwater's Carnival entertainment budget cut in half to £1250, as well as Burnham and Highbridge's Christmas lights, and there will be no funds given to annual flower festival Britain in Bloom.

Arts groups across Somerset will miss out on funds from Sedgemoor and Bridgwater Arts Centre could also be given a seven per cent budget cut.

Pete Bastin, president of Bridgwater's Carnival Committee, told the Mercury: “We put on the entertainments on carnival day to attract people into Bridgwater.

“So this would be a sad loss for us and also shopkeepers and traders in the town.”
